The sound of Manhattan Sleeps is a modern yet timeless blend of acoustic and electric, with an atmospheric splash of synths and exotic percussion. The lyrics are both introspective and outward looking – searching for spirituality without pretension or pat answers. Maya’s vocals are warm and powerfully assured. Jeff’s guitar playing and other instrumental work provide a solid foundation for Maya’s voice. The first cut, “Road to Jerusalem,” was included on a Best Of anthology CD from Radio Nur. Both the album and the song were number one in their categories on MP3.com for several weeks.
This CD rewards repeated listening, both because of the quality of its presentation and the diversity of its songs, from the soft rock classic (or it should be) “Manhattan Sleeps” to the middle eastern sounds of the Baha’i oriented songs that round out the album. Sensitive, full-voiced singing, and skillful synth. And real soprano sax — perfect here. — Peter Morgan
